In collaboration with Nippon Television Europe (NTVE), TodaysArt has created a program that focuses on Japan. One of the highlights of this program is the ‘Open Reel Ensemble’ of Ei Wada, in collaboration with Kimitoshi Sato,Haruka Yoshida, Takumi Namba, and Masaru Yoshida. The ‘Open Reel Ensemble’ combines reel-to-reel (‘open reel’) tape deck technology and modern technology to create a new musical instrument. Sampling their voices and sounds on the spot, the ‘Open Reel Ensemble’ uses multiple tape decks to form a unique performance around a forgotten medium.
After composing a number of musical pieces Ei Wada (b. 1987) subsequently switched his attention to outmoded electrical appliances, interested in their supposed obsolescence. He recontextualized and modified them to be played as musical instruments.
