The SHAPE platform for innovative music and audiovisual art enters its next phase and presents a new roster of 48 artists

TodaysArt is part of SHAPE since its inception 2015. The project, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, unites 16 European festivals to create a joint platform that supports innovative and aspiring emergent musicians and interdisciplinary artists with an interest in sound.

As of 2018, SHAPE has been prolonged for a second phase for four more years until 2021. Going ahead, SHAPE’s artistic presentations will have a wider geographical reach. In addition to the SHAPE member festivals in 16 cities and 12 countries, SHAPE showcases will take place in countries that are not represented within the network.

In addition, SHAPE is planning educational events for artists this year. Aside from engaging artists with topical workshops or lectures, these occasions will serve as opportunities for them to network, exchange ideas and initiate collaborations.

SHAPE kicks off with artistic presentations and public talks at Berlin’s CTM festival (26 January – 4 February), including SHAPE acts JASSS, Nene H and NAKED. One can also expect a large SHAPE showcase outside of Europe in the tradition of SHAPE’s previous activities at Canada’s MUTEK or Brazil’s Novas Frequências. More info will be announced soon.

SHAPE artists 2018

The roster of SHAPE artists this year continues to demonstrate the eclecticism that is an outcome of all 16 diverse festivals selecting artists and projects together. A deliberate desire to detect streams of fresh ideas and unexpected influences beyond genre categories has influenced the choices of the festival curators. Among the 48 artists are Berlin’s Sarah Farina, Italian composer Caterina Barbieri, noise artist Pan Daijing, Opal Tapes affiliate Gosheven, Tunisian producer Deena Abdelwahed and Catalan DJ Tutu, who plays everything from bass house to cosmic trance, abstract grime and schizophrenic tribalism.
